Markham Celebrates Philippine Independence Day

The day started cloudy and it was raining, but moods were light as members of the Markham Federation of Filipino Canadians and friends gathered at the Markham Civic Centre to celebrate the flag raising of the Philippine flag and to commemorate the 126 years of independence.

The Philippine flag flew at the Markham Civic Centre for a week that started on June 9, 2024.

The MFFC seniors sang “Lupang Hinirang” followed by the youth group for “O Canada”.  Angie Bansil gave a powerful renditions of “Ako ay Pilipino” and “Bayan Ko”.

Dignitaries present were Deputy Mayor Michael Chan of the City of Markham, MP Paul Chiang and Deputy Consul General Kerwin Tate representing the Philippine Consulate as well as members of the York Regional Police.

The celebration continued on at the MFFC centre on Denison Ave, Markham with lots of food, treats and performances.

Even as the rain poured outside, the festivities continued on indoors and everyone had a wonderful time!
