DUMAGUETE CITY – The local government unit (LGU) of Dumaguete City, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), and the National Museum are gearing up for activities to pay tribute to the late Eddie Romero, National Artist for Film and Broadcast.
The activities this weekend will highlight the birth centenary celebration of Romero, Edgar Sinco Romero in real life, who hailed from this Negros Oriental capital, Katherine Aguilar, city public information officer, said on Thursday.

These include free public screenings of Romero’s most popular and awarded films, lectures about his life and achievements, training on film and archive restoration, an exhibit, and the unveiling of a bronze bust of the late film director, she said.
“Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon?” (1976) is scheduled at the Luce Auditorium of Silliman University on Friday at 3 p.m., to be followed by “Kamakalawa” (1981) on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the same venue, with control tickets to be issued.
“Aguila” (1980) will be shown at the Pantawan People’s Park at the Rizal Boulevard at 7:30 p.m., also on Saturday.
National and local dignitaries and family members will lead the unveiling of Romero’s centennial bust, donated by NCCA, at The Presidencia at the city hall grounds on Sunday, July 7, during Romero’s 100th birth date.
The National Artist died in 2013.
A memorabilia exhibit will also be held at the old Presidencia, now the National Museum of the Philippines – Dumaguete.
Meanwhile, Aguilar said they have tapped universities and schools to partner with them in promoting the life and works of Romero so the younger generation would learn to appreciate his contributions to the film and broadcast industries.
