VP Duterte on next DepEd chief: I have no recommendation

Vice President Sara Duterte, who recently resigned from her post as Department of Education (DepEd) secretary, did not recommend anyone as replacement to President Marcos.

In an interview on the sidelines of the 2024 Office of the Vice President (OVP) Pasidungog in Cebu City, the official cited that a Cabinet post is a position of “trust and confidence,” the appointment of which the Chief Executive should solely exercise.

“Wala ako na-recommend na new secretary for the Department of Education dahil ang posisyon ng secretary ay sa posisyon ng (I did not recommend a new secretary for the Department of Education because the position of a secretary is a position of) trust and confidence on the appointing power, appointing authority, which is the President,” she told reporters on Saturday, June 29.

“So, dapat talaga yan pinili ng Pangulo dahil dapat ‘yan pinagkakatiwalaan ng Pangulo (So, it should be someone chosen by the President because he/she needs to be trusted by the President),” Duterte added.

Duterte’s resignation will take effect on July 19, or after her 30-day notice lapses.

While she did not give a reason for her resignation from the Education department, she maintained that she did so not out of weakness but out of compassion for students and teachers.

On Friday, June 28, Senate President Francis Escudero and Senator JV Ejercito said that Senator Sonny Angara, who is on his last term as senator, is fit to be Duterte’s successor in DepEd.

Marcos, on the other hand, said he has yet to find a new DepEd secretary despite the urgency to fill the vacant position.

“It turns out it’s harder than I thought because we absolutely have to get it right. So I’m giving myself more time,” he said in a media interview in Makati City on Saturday morning.

“We’re looking at everyone. We don’t make a shortlist,” the Chief Executive added. — Raymund Antonio
