Japan has extended P121 million in grant assistance to the Philippines to provide Filipinos the opportunity to study in Japanese universities.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo and Japanese Ambassador Endo Kazuya on Friday led the signing and exchange of diplomatic notes ceremony for the Official Development Assistance (ODA) grant on the Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship for academic year (AY) 2025-2026.
The grant is a cornerstone of the Japanese government’s yearly ODA package since 2002.
It offers two to three-year postgraduate scholarships at Japanese universities for Filipinos, who are poised to assume leadership roles and enhance public service in the Philippines.
“Excited to meet the new 20 promising Filipino Civil Servants who’ll be off to Japan for their master’s degrees,” Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Endo Kazuya said in a post on X.
The approved grant amount for the upcoming year is worth 327 million Japanese Ten or P121 million.
Officials from the Department of Finance (DOF) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency witnessed the ceremony.
According to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), Japan remains as the Philippines’ top bilateral ODA partner, demonstrating its steadfast support for Philippine development priorities spanning infrastructure, health, human resources, agriculture, education, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief. — Joseph Pedrajas
