The Netherlands eyes defense deal with PH

THE Netherlands is interested in establishing naval defense cooperation with the Philippines, said a Defense official.

Department of National Defense (DND) spokesman Arsenio Andolong said on Thursday that The Netherlands’ Ambassador to the Philippines Marielle Geraedts met with Defense Secretary Gilberto “Gibo” Teodoro Jr. at the DND headquarters in Quezon City on Tuesday.

Andolong said Geraedts underscored the long-term strategic and economic advantages of such cooperation in relation with the Philippines’ National Security Policy for the period of 2023-2028.

Teodoro, seeing the merits of the proposal, suggested a broader defense cooperation that includes cyber and artificial intelligence.

Teodoro briefed Geraedts on the recalibration of Philippine defense strategy that is now characterized by a credible protection of its exclusive economic zone. — Franco Jose C. Baroña
