Senate website encounters rise in cyberattacks

The Senate said on Tuesday, Oct. 17, that it recorded a spike in cyberattacks last Sunday, Oct. 15.

This was according to Senate Secretary Renato Bantug Jr. He added that as soon as they learned about the hacking of the website of the House of Representatives (HOR), the upper chamber’s team went on alert and continuous monitoring.

He also mentioned while the Senate’s website has perimeter and application firewall, the technical team also made adjustments.

The HOR website fell victim to unauthorized access on Sunday ,which led to its vandalism whichwas first detected at just before noon. In the succeeding minutes, the website was down or could no longer be accessed.

In a statement, HOR said that immediate steps have been taken to address the issue, and they are working closely with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) and law enforcement agencies concerned to investigate the matter.

DICT said that the cyberattack may have been carried out by local hackers.

Sen. Risa Hontiveros filed Senate Resolution No. 829, stating thar she finds it necessary to look into the current status of cybersecurity measures in government and the preparedness of the state to address malicious cyberattacks.

On the other hand, Sen. Grace Poe, for her part, urged the DICT and other concerned agencies to put a halt to what is turning out to be a hacking spree of government websites. — Dhel Nazario
